Ed Dwight, at 90, is featured in the National Geographic film “The Space Race,” which documents the stories of Black astronauts, and their first pioneer, Ed. Ed was selected by the Air Force to train as an astronaut with NASA, having met the criteria of 1500 hours of flying jets, a BA in engineering or science (Dwight has an aeronautical engineering degree from Arizona Univ.), and three consecutive ‘outstanding’ ratings from military superiors. He was, however, for reasons vividly described in the film, never to be an astronaut. However, his contribution to the future Blacks who would become astronauts is so important, that NASA named an asteroid after him. Not only that, but in addition to his post Air Force business enterprises, Ed earned a Master’s in Fine Arts, which resulted in several of his sculptures being flown into space, including on the Orion!
