Sally Snowman, at 72, the only remaining official lighthouse keeper in the United States, is just now retiring from her 20 years of service. From the first time Sally visited the lighthouse, at 10 years of age, with her father, a Coast Guard auxiliarist, Sally knew she wanted to be the lighthouse keeper. The 307-year-old Boston Light so impressed her, that at the tender age of 10 Sally declared she wanted to be married there someday, and she was. Then there were her stints as a college professor and Coast Guard volunteer, it’s only later that she applied for the position and got the job. Sally steps down as the first female keeper in the lighthouse’s history, thus making history herself.
