Dr. Noelle Nelson

Martha Strever, at 85, began her 64th year of teaching math at Linden Avenue Middle School in Red Hook, N.Y. When Martha began her teaching career, PCs didn’t exist. Martha remembers vividly not only having to teach herself how to work on a computer but also being tasked with training the school staff on how to use them. Martha spent hours with the staff at the local Radio Shack figuring things out. In 1971, Martha became the first female department chair in the Red Hook district, overseeing math instruction, a position she held for fully 49 years. Her one condition to taking the post was that she be able to continue teaching in the classroom because that was – and is – Martha’s passion. Wow!
